Cristina Cardenas

Cardenas often makes large - scale works that reflect her desire to dirupt stereotypes of garden, religion and race.

Her large painting are always done on bank paper (amate) a type of paper that has been produced in the state of puebla for several centuries. "She creates portraits of such mythical and historical figures as Coatlicue, Malinche, and Coyolxauqui; of actual people in her life; and of unamed or unknown people.

Gracefully rendering the human form and drapery wich frequently accompanies it, Cardenas' images have an almost classical character.
